Zvonareva has never been past the fourth round at the US Open before and this is a great opportunity for her to reach unchartered territory. She showed the threat she can pose on hard courts by reaching the Montreal final the week before this tournament.
Zvonareva's progress to the last 16 has looked smooth and assured and she has dealt well with two young talents of the WTA Tour – Sabine Lisicki and Alexandra Dulgheru, defeating both in straight sets. After Jelena Jankovic's exit, the path to the semi-finals looks wide open for the Russian.
Petkovic is a powerful but inconsistent player who has surged up the rankings in 2010. However before this tournament she had never been past the second round of a slam and she's been very fortunate to get this far. Bethanie Mattek-Sands had three match points against her in round two but couldn't hold her nerve and then Shuai Peng handed her a walkover through the third round.
