Venus Williams continues her comeback on Wednesday as she faces Ana Ivanovic in the second round of the Eastbourne event.
Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic will resume their rivalry on Wednesday as the two former number one players meet in the second round of the WTA Eastbourne event, a grass court tournament that leads into Wimbledon
(Williams 8/15, Ivanovic 11/8; bet365).
Ivanovic has just one career victory over Williams, that coming from the 2008 Australian Open, a time in the Serb's career when she was playing her best. Other than that match-up the two players have met six other times with Williams composing a 6-1 record against Ivanovic career-wise.
The two players have met twice on grass, both times at Wimbledon, and the result has not been pretty for Ivanovic. Both victories for Williams ended in straight sets with their most recent match from 2009 ending quickly as Ivanovic tapped out down a set and 0-1 in the second.
Williams is the better player entering the match but the question is how good is she going to play so soon after returning from injury? She answered that question somewhat in the first round with a solid win over Andrea Petkovic and if Williams can beat the German, she should be able to handle Ivanovic as well.
The Serb did make the semifinals of a grass court event last week in Birmingham and appears to be on form so perhaps there is potential for a competitive match.
