The American has only managed to take part in ten competitive matches this season though, so her credentials as a title contender here are debatable.
She managed to reach the second week at Wimbledon, in only her second week back since a lengthy injury lay-off. Unfortunately, she was unable to take part in any of the build-up to the U.S Open, and it doesn’t look like she’ll be at her best here. Even so, it seems unwise to completely write off the former world No. 1.
Williams will make a start here tonight against Vesna Dolonts. Dolonts is ranked just inside the top hundred following a fairly good season. That said, she’s struggled in recent weeks, and it doesn’t look like she’ll be able to match Williams tonight.
