Venus Williams hopes to seal a US Open quarter-final place when she plays Shahar Peer later today.

Venus has come through the first three rounds very convincingly on paper but the tennis has yet to match up to the emphatic scorelines.  Coming into the tournament with no matches since Wimbledon she's been lucky to have the kindest of draws, getting to play her way in against a string of lowly ranked qualifiers and the clean hitting has gradually started to return.

She now goes up several notches against the athletic 16th seed Peer who's got a very solid baseline game with some decent weapons. She's also yet to drop a set and impressed in a 6-4, 6-4 third round win over Flavia Pennetta.

Peer looks a good pick for the upset on paper but Venus has the confidence of knowing she's won all five of their previous matches without coming close to dropping a set. Plus she's beaten Peer three times already in 2010 – 6-1, 6-4 in Dubai, 6-3, 6-4 in Rome and 6-3, 6-0 in Madrid.
