Venus made light of her lack of match practise in the opening round, destroying Italy's Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-1. There were the odd signs that she's still suffering some pain in her left leg  but otherwise it was a very convincing start.

"I was playing a tough opponent today, she hits that slice so well so I was really happy to get through after not playing in forever,” she said. "I was pretty happy with my game, I did everything pretty consistently and I had to because she didn't give me a lot of errors. But of course I'm looking to improve with every match."  

Venus has been fortunate to avoid the dangerous floaters in the first couple of rounds and should enjoy similarly comfortable progress against Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino, ranked 179 in the world.

Marino battled past Ksenia Pervak 7-5 in the third in round one but this will be her first experience of competing in the towering Arthur Ashe stadium against a former champion and crowd favourite.
