Venus had been hoping to compete for the US in the Fed Cup final next month as well as the year-ending WTA Championships in Doha but the knee injury which forced her out for most of the summer, continues to plague her.

"I have been getting treatment and therapy on my knee and have been making progress, but unfortunately must continue to keep weight off my knee for the short term and won't be ready to return to competition in 2010,” she said. “I am looking forward to returning to full health in time for the start of 2011 season and hopefully having the opportunity to play in both the Fed Cup and WTA Championships next year."

2010 has been a fairly average year for Venus by her standards. She continued to pick up titles at the smaller events, winning Dubai and Acapulco at the start of the year but she was unable to make a grand slam final, falling in the Wimbledon quarter-finals to Tsvetana Pironkova when the path to the final looked wide open.

Kim Clijsters' return has proved to be a thorn in Venus' side at the big tournaments. The Belgian outplayed her in the Miami final and denied her again in a thrilling three setter in the US Open semis.
