This looks to be a fascinating match as Istomin is enjoying his best ever year on the tour while Robredo is coming back into some kind of form after a largely dire 2010. He came into the US Open having won just two matches on hard courts all summer but scraped his way through to the fourth round.
The Spaniard is a former champion in Metz, beating Andy Murray to win the title three years ago and the seventh seed made a decent start, beating Daniel Brands 6-1, 7-6.
He has a tough task on his hands to repel the power play of Istomin. The 24 year old Uzbek knocked out Florent Serra 6-4, 6-4 in round one and his huge serve and forehand make him a very dangerous floater indoors.
Istomin reached his first ATP final in New Haven last month and he could have sprung a few surprises at the US Open but unfortunately got Rafael Nadal early on, putting up a very respectable performance against the eventual champion.
Istomin is a very good bet here for the upset.
