Tim Henman believes there is still much more to come from Roger Federer over the next few years and he's backing the Swiss to regain the world number one spot.

Federer has been all but written off by some pundits at times over the past couple of years, particularly after his second successive Wimbledon quarter-final defeat. The Swiss has not won a Grand Slam since January 2010 but with a fabulous finish to 2011, he showed he still has what it takes to see off the best in the world.

“I think with a rolling ranking it will be interesting to see if Federer can get back to number one," Henman told the ATP Champions Tour website. "He is just short of Sampras' record for most weeks at world number one. I know Roger will really want to break that record, so I think it’s possible. I think he will win more Slams, I really do. If the conditions favour him then Roger at his best is still better than anyone else.”

“My highlight of 2011 has to be Federer winning the ATP World Tour Finals in London. I've always been a Federer fan because I love the way he plays, and while he's lost a few matches out there this year, he deserved to win in London. It’s amazing that people were trying to write him off. For Roger to play the way that he did in London and go beyond both Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl in terms of year ending championship victories, that was incredible."

The big test for Federer in 2012 is whether he can regain his authority on the slower hard courts used at tournaments like the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami. Federer looked in decent form en route to the Aussie Open semis last year but suffered a crushing loss at the hands of Novak Djokovic.
