Bellucci made the semifinals in Madrid where he threatened to beat Novak Djokovic.
Thomaz Bellucci had a successful campaign at the 2011 Madrid Masters as he survived a section of the draw that had Andy Murray in it. Bellucci, a semifinalist from Madrid, had a strong effort against the eventual tournament champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and it is worth noting that the Brazilian played Djokovic tighter than Rafael Nadal did as Bellucci took a set off of the Serbian.
With his efforts Thomaz Bellucci jumped up 14 spots in the new ATP rankings (May 9th, 2011) and he is now ranked 22nd in the world. That's just one spot off of his career high ranking of 21st as Bellucci enters the Rome Masters.
Next up for the Brazilian is a match against Paolo Lorenzi and, surviving that, a second round match against world number one Rafael Nadal. Bellucci is unlikely to survive through to the third round however if he gets a good draw for the French Open there is no reason why he can't improve upon his fourth appearance from last season.
