Tamira Paszek will begin in Washington on Tuesday with a first round clash against Melanie Oudin

Following an excellent run at Wimbledon this year, Tamira Paszek of Austria enters this week’s Citi Open in Washington as the third seed. The 20 year-old is yet to win a title this season, and will be eager to make the most of her relatively favourable position in the draw.

Paszek’s 26-16 match record for the season is one of the better records in the WTA, and on current form it seems likely that the world No. 42 can make a good run. Her progress in a lot of tournaments this year has been stalled by unfortunate draws, and now that she’s amongst the seeds we might see her become more of a threat to the main contenders.

Her opening match will be a first round contest against Melanie Oudin. Oudin has been in questionable form this year, though she’ll surely be doing her utmost to turn things around in front of a home crowd. She lost 6-1, 7-5 to Paszek the last time the pairing met though, and will need to be at her best to avoid defeat on Tuesday.
