Stanislas Wawrinka will face the challenge of Fabio Fognini in round one of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
Stanislas Wawrinka made a bright start to 2011, but he is entering this year’s Internazionali BNL d’Italia off the back of four consecutive defeats.
The world No. 14 is capable of making a decent run in this event, and is expected to turn things around in the near future. He will begin his campaign in Rome with a first round matchup against Fabio Fognini of Italy.
Fognini is ranked just inside the top fifty and will be looking to improve upon an 8-12 season record. The Italian is an adept clay-court player, but he is in for a real struggle on Monday. Even so, Fognini proved that he’s capable of testing Wawrinka by taking him to three sets in Acapulco earlier in the year, a clay court event.
Fognini cannot be discounted in the match as he might just be able to sneak a win in here.
Wawrinka has a 2-0 head to head record against Fognini, and recorded his other win against the world No. 48 last season in the French Open. The general consensus is that Wawrinka will claim victory in this match.
