Spain have claimed the title for the past two years with Fernando Verdasco in particular, playing an increasingly starring role. Verdasco was crucial to Spain’s shock win in the 2008 final against Argentina.
 
However for the opening tie this year against Switzerland, Spain will have to do without Verdasco and Rafael Nadal.

“Nadal has helped their cause considerably over the past two seasons, and
although Spain should prove too good for the Swiss in the first round, they
will hoping he is back for latter rounds,” Coral spokesman Gary Burton said.

They are still 1/9 favourites to defeat the Swiss who are badly missing Roger Federer and will be up against it, particularly with the tie on clay in Spain.  

Spain still have a wealth of clay-court experts at their disposal with David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo and Nicholas Almagro all in the team. To indicate their vast strength in depth 2003 Roland Garros champion Juan Carlos Ferrero was not even selected.

Serbia are second favourites, just behind Spain at 7-2, with France backed at 5-1. Sweden have also been backed at 40-1.
