Spain and Czech Republic wasted little time in making the Davis Cup final.
Both countries led 2-0 after Friday's singles in their semi-finals against Israel and Croatia and the doubles proved to be a formality for both nations.
After winning both rubbers after nearly ten hours of tennis on Friday, the Czechs had broken their opponents physically and mentally. Marin Cilic lost a four hour clash with Tomas Berdych late on Friday and he looked to have little left as he and Lovro Zovko succumbed 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 to Berdych and Stepanek. After the first set, the result was inevitable but this didn’t deter the thousands of travelling Czech supporters and the stadium erupted once the win was clinched.
The Spanish were always overwhelming favourites against Israel and didn’t drop a set in Friday’s singles rubbers. The doubles proved a little less straightforward against the classy pairing of Erlich and Ram but Lopez and Robredo came through 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
Both teams went on to secure 4-1 wins overall after Sunday's dead rubbers.
They are the defending champions after a dramatic victory in Argentina last November. Now with home advantage for the final against the Czechs, they will be favourites to retain the Davis Cup, particularly if rejoined by Nadal and Verdasco.
Spain are currently 1/8 with Blue Square to triumph in early December. The Czechs have already been rated as big outsiders and are 11/2 with Sky Bet.
