Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both inched closer to meeting in the semifinals of the 2011 Miami Masters as they both advanced to the fourth round on Monday.
Federer defeated Argentina's Juan Monaco in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 and with the result Federer at least equals his performance from last season.
Federer's fourth round match does not appear threatening as Mikhail Youzhny, the best hard courter Federer could have played in the fourth round, suffered an upset to Olivier Rochus. Federer will now play Rochus and the current world number three will surely be considered a huge favorite in that match.
Nadal defeated Feliciano Lopez in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 as Lopez, despite striking seven aces in the match, only had a first serve percentage of 47%, far too low to win a Masters level third round match.
Nadal now awaits the winner between Alexandr Dolgopolov and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
While the two best players in action on the men's side won their matches on Monday, on the women's side there was a shocker as world number one Caroline Wozniacki is out of the tournament. Wozniacki suffered a loss to Germany's Andrea Petkovic with the final score in the match 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.
Petkovic will now face a resurgent Jelena Jankovic in a quarterfinal match that looks to be an entertaining and competitive affair.
