Shahar Peer and Yanina Wickmayer are due to meet for an eagerly anticipated quarter-final contest here in Indian Wells
Shahar Peer has justified her seeding here in Indian Wells by emerging from a difficult part of the draw to reach the last eight. She began her campaign with a straight sets win over Bethanie Mattek-Sands in round two, and went on to beat No. 17 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (2-6, 6-3, 7-5) in round three. Following from this, she edged past No. 5 seed Francesca Schiavone (6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3)) in round four. Having ground out a third set tie-breaker victory over Schiavone, Peer will surely be feeling confident ahead of her last eight matchup against No. 23 seed Yanina Wickmayer.
Wickmayer has only dropped one set this week, against No. 14 seed Kaia Kanepi. The Belgian showed great composure to dismiss Dominika Cibulkova in round four (7-5, 7-5), but will need to produce another first rate performance here in order to reach the final four.
The pairing have a 2-2 head to head record, though the momentum is with Peer, as the Israeli won her last two matches against Wickmayer. Peer last beat Wickmayer earlier this season at the Dubai Open, where she also defeated the Belgian in 2010. The last two matches between the pairing went into three sets, and the fans here are anticipating another exciting showdown.
