Sergiy Stakhovsky meets Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinals of the ATP Nice Open

Fernando Verdasco is now the highest seeded player left in the Open de Nice Cote d’Azur, and is the favourite to win the title. The early exit of Robin Soderling has opened things up a little, and third seed Gael Monfils has a tricky match against Potito Starace tomorrow.

Verdasco is an easy choice for favourite in this match. He beat Florent Serra in round two with ease (6-2, 6-2), and outranks Sergiy Stakhovsky by a fair margin. Stakhovsky is the world number sixty-six, and shouldn’t cause Verdasco too many problems.

Verdasco has already won two ATP World Tour titles this year, in San Jose and Barcelona. He has a 16-4 year to date record on clay and is likely to dominate today’s match. Stakhovsky meanwhile, has only played six matches on clay all season, though he does have a 4-2 record.

With Roland Garros fast approaching, it will be worth keeping an eye on Verdasco. This is the first matchup between these two, but it’s hard to see Stakhovsky coming out of this match with anything. The winner of this match will play either Marcos Baghdatis or Leonardo Mayer in the semi finals.
