It’s a battle of the generations as Serena takes on rising star Wozniacki.
Many rate Wozniacki as a future world number one and multiple grand slam winner. It’s easy to see why as the Dane, still a teenager, has risen to four in the rankings on the back of her run to the US Open final. Until then Wozniacki had won multiple titles on the tour but had never really got it together at grand slam level. In Flushing Meadows she showed her steel, in particular with a dramatic 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova which opened the draw up for her.
She’s needed all of that steel to make the semis after a dramatic series of matches in Doha this week. First up was a three hour nail biter with Victoria Azarenka in which Wozniacki saved match point before winning 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. She was taken to the brink again by Vera Zvonereva a couple of days later. Wozniacki blew a 6-0, 5-2 lead and almost had to retire in the third set due to severe cramping but somehow battled through 6-0, 6-7, 6-4.
However does Wozniacki have anything left in the tank for Serena Williams ? It didn’t appear so on Friday as she was blown apart 6-2, 6-2 by Jelena Jankovic.
Serena has had a much more straightforward path, winning all three matches in the Maroon Group. Predictably she was given her toughest test by sister Venus in yet another marathon three hour encounter which was decided in a final set tiebreak.
When Serena last played Wozniacki it took a final set breaker to separate them, in Sydney earlier this year. Usually I would expect it to be just as close again but given how burnt out Wozniacki looked yesterday I think Serena is a very strong favourite.
Serena is 1/9 to reach the final with William Hill while sporting bet are pricing Caroline Wozniacki at 15/2
