Serena Williams made a victorious return to Wimbledon in round one, defeating an out-of-form Aravane Rezai in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Whilst Rezai has struggled to string wins together this year, she put up a real fight, which Williams was evidently relieved to have overcome. She will now be looking to launch yet another title challenge here.

Williams may have been out of the game for almost a year, but her game appears to be as effective as ever. Halep isn’t expected to prevail here, though her first round demolition of Bojana Jovanovski (6-1, 6-2) outlined the threat that she poses to Serena’s title bid. This will be Halep’s first ever contest against Serena, and it could prove to be a fascinating matchup if the Romanian is at her best.
