Serena Williams will take on Samantha Stosur on Monday for the U.S Open title

Serena Williams remains the favourite to win this year’s U.S Open, and on current form it seems unlikely that she’ll falter at the final hurdle. The three-time champion produced an astonishing display against world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-finals, striking 34 winners en route to a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Amazingly, Wozniacki was unable to produce even one winner in the first set, and was second best throughout.

Williams will have to get past Samantha Stosur in the final to lift the title. Stosur was dragged into a three setter in her semi-final, where she met the unseeded Angelique Kerber. Kerber had defied the odds in a big way to reach the final four, but ultimately she couldn’t do enough to overcome Stosur. The Australian was on the back foot in the second set, but her power game came into force in the third, and she left the court with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 success.

Williams has a 4-2 head to head record against Stosur, and won’t be expecting to have everything her own way. Wozniacki’s more defensive game was easily picked off by the former world No. 1, but Stosur’s harder hitting approach may prove to be harder to break down.
