Three time US Open champion Serena Williams has been denied a discretionary seeding for the final major of the year.
Williams has been the player to beat this summer, winning titles in Stanford and Toronto at a canter and she goes into Flushing Meadows as the title favourite. However unlike at Wimbledon, the organisers have decided not to bump her up the seeding list.
As a result she's the 28th seed and could face the likes of Maria Sharapova as early as the third round.
Caroline Wozniacki heads the seeds but the Dane looks unlikely to break her Grand Slam duck if recent form is anything to go by, losing her opening matches in Toronto and Cincinnati.
Sharapova is third seed and the 2006 US Open champion will be determined for more major glory after winning Cincinnati at the weekend.
Former champion Venus Williams is the most dangerous floater in the draw having slipped down the rankings following an injury enforced absence since Wimbledon. Venus is always a consistent performer in New York and no one will want to draw her in the early rounds.
