Serena would have been favourite to win her fourth title in Flushing Meadows having already captured the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2010. However after winning the Wimbledon crown, Serena suffered a freak injury when she stepped on shards of broken glass in a restaurant and had to be taken to hospital for surgery.
“Due to the surgery I had on my foot earlier this month, my doctors have advised against my playing so that my foot can heal," Williams said in a statement. "I take great pride in playing the Grand Slam tournaments and have not missed one since 2006; not being able to be part of this year's US Open is one of the most devastating moments of my career.”
“Playing in front of the electric crowd of New York at the US Open and competing against the best female athletes in the world is always a highlight, and I look forward to getting back on the court as quickly as possible."
It is a blow for Serena who is chasing the women's record for the most grand slam titles.
With Venus Williams, Sam Stosur and Maria Sharapova among the other big names struggling with injuries, defending champion Kim Clijsters looks set to be strong favourite to claim her third US Open title.
