Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week's Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo citing a need for more rest for her injured foot.

Williams had been scheduled to be top seed at the Premier Mandatory event in Tokyo which features a super-strong field with Caroline Wozniacki, Vera Zvonareva, Maria Sharapova and Francesca Schiavone all competing.

It is the fifth tournament Serena has missed since cutting her foot on some glass in a freak accident at a restaurant in July.
She plans to compete for the USA in November's Fed Cup final against Italy but it is not known whether she will play in the end of year WTA Championships in Doha.
