Serena Williams looked down and out but somehow managed to defeat Victoria Azarenka.

Serena has showed so many times over the years that you must never write her off in a grand slam no matter what her current form is or how far behind she is in a match.

However at 6-4, 4-0 down to the rising star from Belarus Victoria Azarenka, the end of Serena’s 2010 Australian Open campaign did appear to be nigh.

Serena herself even admitted later that at that point she was thinking about booking flights back home.

Azarenka continued to play well but Serena’s game went up multiple notches, going for broke on groundstrokes and the first serve improving dramatically. It was almost as if she was a completely different player to the first set and a half.

Azarenka continued to press hard and even led 3-1 in the second set tiebreak but that lead was soon wiped out and then Serena steamrollered through the final set to clinch a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory.

Afterwards a bemused Azarenka commented, “I think I played good tennis today. It was very high level of tennis from both of us. I knew she would fight until the last point and she started playing unbelievable, I think, from 4-0. I mean, she was really in the zone at that point.”
 
"I didn't change my game, she really went for her shots and she made them. I don't think I did many unforced errors, but it was her controlling some of the points."
