Serena Williams eases into quarter-finals
Serena Williams and Dinara Safina reached the quarter-finals of the Medibank International on Tuesday.
Serena blasted past Spain’s Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-2, 6-2 and afterwards was more keen to talk local culture than discuss the tennis.
Serena is a big fan of Sydney’s sights. “I went to the Opera House. I’ve done it all,” she enthused. “It’s such a fabulous city. You always see it in movies, like Mission Impossible. So I feel really cool to be in a cool city. It’s fun.”
In contrast Safina had to fight her way back from 5-0 down in the first set to defeat Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 6-4. With Radwanska ranked number ten in the world it was a horrible opening match of the year.
French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was another of the many early casualties here, going down 7-5, 6-2 to the dangerous Slovak Dominika Cibulkova.
