The Serbian wild card duo of Marko Djokovic (Novak's younger brother) and Darko Madjarovski stunned top seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic on Thursday at the inaugural Serbia Open 2009 knocking the reigning champions out in 3 sets.
The 18-year-old Djokovic earned his first match win on the ATP World Tour circuit in front of his hometown crowd. He had previously teamed up brother Novak to two first-round losses in doubles action however teamed up with Madjarovski this time. The 25 year old was making his ATP World Tour debut.
Reigning champions Nestor and Zimonjic had won 12 straight matches since beginning their 2009 clay-court campaign a month ago at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Monte-Carlo. The Canadian-Serbian duo, both born in Belgrade, had finished the 2008 season as the ATP World Tour Doubles Champions after clinching the Tennis Masters Cup title.
Nestor and Zimonjic's loss capped off a poor showing for top seeds at this week’s tennis tournaments, with Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan bowing out in their opener in Munich and Bruno Soares and Kevin Ullyett in Estoril.
