Samantha Stosur has suddenly become the favourite to win this year’s French Open, and has made it through to her first ever Grand Slam final with extraordinary style, battering number for seed Jelena Jankovic 6-1, 6-2. Stosur was simply too good for Jankovic, and disposed of the Serb in less than an hour to continue her amazing run here.

Stosur went into Roland Garros having won more clay-court WTA matches than anyone else this season, and has clearly proved that she’s one of the world’s best on this surface. Stosur has created big news throughout this fortnight’s French Open. She began by eliminating four-time Roland Garros champion Justine Henin; then she knocked out the world number one, Serena Williams. Defeating Jankovic alone would have been a great achievement, but to have eliminated three of the tournament’s favourites is something else.

She will face Francesca Schiavone in the final, in a matchup that nobody would have predicted for the final. Schiavone won the first set in her semi final against Elena Dementieva, 7-6, before Dementieva was forced to retire due to an ankle injury that she had sustained in the second round against Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Stosur and Schiavone have been superb this fortnight, and it will be intriguing to see who comes out on top in the final. Neither player has competed in a Grand Slam final before, and this perhaps adds to the excitement surrounding the final match. The conclusion of this year’s French Open should be fascinating.
