Sam Stosur is up against Elena Vesnina in round one of the US Open on Monday.

Stosur has enjoyed her best ever year on the WTA Tour, coming agonisingly close to winning her first Grand Slam title at the French Open. The Aussie has risen to five in the world and her supporters are hoping she can produce something special over the next fortnight.

Stosur has always said hard courts are her best surface and her big game should suit the quick courts at Flushing Meadows. However her record in New York is poor and she's never been past the second round.

Moreover she's short of match practise after missing most of August with an arm injury. She competed last week in New Haven but was thrashed 6-2, 6-1 by Nadia Petrova in the quarters.

Vesnina is a tough draw for her. The Russian reached the third round of the US Open last year and  beat Stosur in three sets at New Haven. Having beaten Melanie Oudin and Francesca Schiavone at Cincinnati a few weeks ago she's clearly in decent form at the moment.
