Aussie veteran Sam Stosur believes she can take her second chance at Grand Slam glory when she plays Serena Williams in tonight's US Open final.
Stosur made the French Open final back in 2010 but despite going into that match as the favourite, she lost out to Italy's Francesca Schiavone. After a largely indifferent 2011 she was struggling to hang on to her place in the top ten and her chances of Grand Slam glory appeared to have vanished but now she has another chance.
Stosur told the press after her semi-final win over Angelique Kerber, that she never stopped believing.
"Multiple people came up to me and said, 'You're gonna get another chance,” she said. 'You can come back and make it again.' Of course you want to believe that, but until it happens, you never know if that's the case. So now to be able to turn it around again and have this result, I guess they were right. Now I have another chance to try and win another one.”
However Serena leads their head-to-head 4-2 and convincingly defeated the world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the last four. Wozniacki has no doubt about who will prevail tonight.
“[Stosur] definitely would have to serve well,” the Dane said. “She definitely needs to get a lot of first serves in and try just to go for her shots. But I still think Serena has the edge, and I still think that Serena will win tomorrow.”
