Sam Querrey will shoulder American hopes against Marcel Granollers in round two of the US Open.

After Andy Roddick's early exit, home expectations will be on Querrey to fly the American flag into the second week and beyond. The 6'6 Californian has enjoyed plenty of success in the smaller tournaments, with six titles to his name but when it comes to the slams, Querrey has yet to break the fourth round barrier.

After first round losses this year at the Aussie Open and Roland Garros, Querrey got the ball rolling in the majors at Wimbledon, reaching the last 16 before losing to Andy Murray. Unfortunately for Querrey, if he makes it to that stage again, Murray is highly likely to be blocking his path once more.

However to get there he will need a vast improvement on his first round showing against wildcard Bradley Klahn. Despite his opponent being ranked a lowly 596, Querrey was made to toil for four long sets before progressing.

Querrey played Granollers earlier this year at Queens and Querrey won 6-4, 7-6 and went on to win the title that week. A repeat result is likely as Granollers only broke a four match losing streak by coming from two sets to love down to beat Andreas Seppi in the first round.
