Sam Querrey remains on course to retain the ATP Memphis Open title, and will face Brian Dabul in the second round

Sam Querrey is still in contention for this weeks Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, following a 6-7(5) 7-6(5), 6-4 win against Denis Istomin in round one. Now that Querrey has finally got his first victory of the season under his belt, he’ll be looking to at least progress to the quarters here in Memphis. He will now face Brian Dabul for the opportunity to compete in the final eight.

Dabul enjoyed a much more comfortable passage to round two, defeating Michal Przysiezny in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. The Argentine ranks just inside the top hundred and will be considered the underdog in this meeting. He might fancy his chances right now though, seeing as Querrey has been in shaky form of late.

One of Querrey’s biggest problems in round one was his serve. He only managed to hit 53% of his first serves within the lines, and could easily have lost the match had he not saved three out of three break points.

He demonstrated his capacity to dominate on serve with 19 aces, but he’ll need more consistency if he’s going to make serious headway in this competition. Dabul might be able to find a way of causing an upset on Thursday, though Querrey should get through if he can achieve greater accuracy on serve. This surface should be ideal for a player of Querrey’s stature.
