Andy Roddick needed to hit top form to defeat Tomas Berdych for the second time this season.

As in Brisbane it was another tight match with Berdych left ruing how it had got away. He played a very good match but many suspect the Czech lacks a bit of confidence when it gets close against the very top players and his 7-6(5), 7-6(5) seems to back up that theory.

Roddick was very relieved to get through saying, "It's tough - he hits the ball so hard and flat. It keeps you a little bit off-balance. A lot of the time you feel like you're just scrapping and clawing and trying to hang on in some points.”

"He forced me to play well tonight. I thought he played a good match - his percentages were great on his first serve and he was hitting the ball well from the baseline. I was fortunate to get through that in two."
