Number one seed Roger Federer meets Tomas Berdych in Wimbledon quarterfinals
Roger Federer may have started this year’s Wimbledon championships in a shaky manner, but dispelled any rumours that he might not be capable of winning a seventh grass Slam title by thrashing Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in round four. Once again, Federer is in contention to win Wimbledon, and if he does he will equal Pete Sampras and William Renshaw’s record of winning seven Wimbledon titles.
He faces an in-form Tomas Berdych today, and may need to be on his toes in order to prevent Berdych from becoming the first Czech to reach the Gentlemen’s singles semi finals since Ivan Lendl in 1990. Berdych has a reputation for losing his nerve in the latter stages of the slam events, but Berdych’s appearance in the Roland Garros semi final this year suggests that he may have turned a corner.
Federer appears to have found his feet again on grass though, and at his best he is almost unstoppable at Wimbledon. Federer is the favourite to win this match, and it’s difficult to envision a Wimbledon semi final draw that doesn’t involve him. Still, Berdych has beaten Federer in two of their ten head to head matches, so it would be ignorant to write him off just yet.
