Roger Federer takes on arch-rival Nikolay Davydenko in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters today.

Federer has had the easiest possible route to the quarters. First of all Denis Istomin retired with an ankle injury at 5-2 down in their second round clash and then Philipp Kohlschreiber pulled out with a shoulder injury before they had even taken to the court in the last 16.

Davydenko in contrast, has toughed out two three setters against Robby Ginepri and David Ferrer. The Russian is finally coming back into some form after being sidelined from March-June with a fractured wrist. He had a poor stretch of results on the clay last month and was outplayed by Jeremy Chardy in the third round of Toronto.

Federer won their first 12 matches between 2002 and 2008. He proved to be Davydenko's ultimate nemisis, several times denying the Russian in the latter stages of the Australian, French and US Opens. However Davydenko finally ended the streak with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win in the semis of the end of year ATP World Finals and then followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 win on the way to the Doha title in January. However, beating Federer over five sets is a different matter and when it came to the Aussie Open quarters, Federer predictably came out on top 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 7-5.
