Federer has had the simplest of passages through to the final. His first two opponents were struck down by injury – Denis Istomin after barely a set and Philipp Kohlschreiber before a ball was even hit. Then after dispatching Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 7-5 he cruised past Marcos Baghdatis 6-4, 6-3.
Federer was keen to not give Baghdatis too much time on the ball from the back of the court as he had done in Indian Wells so he rushed the Cypriot at every opportunity, getting into the net and thumping away a succession of volleys.
Fish is through to his first Masters Series final for two years (he reached the Indian Wells final in 2008). His form over the past month and a half has been a revelation but he was very fortunate to get through his semi-final against Andy Roddick. Roddick led by a set and 5-2 but inexplicably crumbled, allowing Fish to hit back and seal a 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 win.
Federer leads 5-1 on the head-to-head but all of his wins came between 2003 and 2005. Their last match was in the Indian Wells semi-finals two years ago where Fish crushed the Swiss 6-3, 6-2.
Still, you have to back Federer on a big occasion like this to come through. He has looked a revitalized player over the past fortnight.
