Last year’s Gerry Weber Open concluded with a crowd pleasing clash between Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt, in which the tenacious Aussie finally snapped a 15-match losing streak against the current world No. 3. In an exciting turn of events, the pairing are set to meet here again, this time in the first round.

Federer will enter this contest as the favourite, despite the fact that he’s had very little time to adjust to the grass courts. The Swiss legend appeared to be back at his best over the last two weeks at the French Open, but was eventually stopped in four sets in the final by the king of clay, Rafael Nadal. If this run of form continues for Federer, then Hewitt will have his work cut out.

Hewitt may have gotten the better of Federer last year, but this year circumstances seem to have conspired against him. Hewitt enters this tournament as the world No. 67, and hasn’t played a competitive match since March when he underwent foot surgery.

Federer has dominated the vast majority of his most recent matches against Hewitt, and currently holds a 17-8 head to head record against him. This contest could potentially be a very close one, but with Hewitt barely recovered from surgery, Federer seems destined for a comfortable victory.
