Roger Federer will begin his campaign for a third Rogers Cup title tonight against Juan Ignacio Chela.

The Swiss won this title in 2004 and 2006 but he has not made the final since 2007 when he came runner-up to Novak Djokovic. Last year Federer was looking good but crashed out in the quarters to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, inexplicably blowing a 5-1 lead.
This will be his first tournament with new coach Paul Annacone and the Swiss will be hoping for a turnaround in fortunes after losing both his French Open and Wimbledon crowns to Rafael Nadal. He has a lot of points to defend in the next month having won Cincinnati and made the US Open final last year so a few more untimely defeats could see him come under pressure from Andy Murray in the rankings.
Chela swept past Alejandro Falla 6-0, 6-3 to reach round two. However he has lost all four of his previous matches with Federer and will have to hope the Swiss throws a seriously dodgy opening performance to have any chance.
