Federer did not exactly make serene progress against lucky loser Nicholas Lapentti on Saturday with his forehand misfiring for most of the early stages of the match but Federer was never in danger and he progressed 6-3, 6-3.
Federer has recently looked less than clinical in the Masters Series events. The last time he picked up one of these titles was in Cincinnati and there was quite a drought before then. If he can continue winning them more records are at stake for the Swiss who needs another title to tie Andre Agassi for Masters Series wins.
France’s Florent Serra should not prove a huge obstacle. Serra is ranked 61 and his best performance so far in 2010 has been reaching the Australian Open third round. He is a solid player with a good forehand but unless Federer’s game is serious off then that should not be enough.
