Roger Federer meets Benjamin Becker in the second round at the ATP Madrid Masters

Roger Federer will be hoping to put in a good performance this week in the run up to Roland Garros, and will know that victory in Madrid would push him even closer towards beating Pete Sampras’s record for most weeks ranked as the world number one. Federer appeared to be playing well last week in Estoril, but was eliminated by the eventual champion Albert Montanes in the semi finals.

Despite this, Federer seemed upbeat, stating that he was more focused on winning the slams and majors to remain at number one and add to his monumental legacy. It is understandable that Federer may have lost his passion for many of the events on the tour, though he will probably be fully focused in Madrid.

This doesn’t bode well for world number fourty-six Benjamin Becker, who faces Federer on Tuesday. Becker tore apart Carlos Moya in round one though, and may manage to give Federer a run for his money if he can find his rhythm early on. The Moya match will have given him confidence, but it’s fair to say that Moya is not the force that he once was.

This could be a close match, though it would be surprising if Federer loses here. It will be fascinating to see how Federer will perform with the French Open on the horizon.
