Roger Federer faces Arnaud Clement in Estoril, seeking a place in the semi finals

Roger Federer recorded his first clay court win of the season on Wednesday, defeating Bjorn Phau 6-3, 6-4. This win enabled him to progress to the quarter finals here, where he is due to meet Arnaud Clement.

Federer seemed fairly confident following his reasonably uncomplicated victory over Phau, and should be happy with the way he played. Federer has his sights on winning the Estoril Open yet again, and may also be motivated by the fact that he’s a mere six weeks away from breaking Pete Sampras’s incredible record of spending 286 weeks as the top ranked player in the world.

Clement, who made the top ten back in 2001, should prove to be more of a challenge than Phau, though hasn’t been quite the same player that he was back then. That said, he’s looked in good shape so far here in Estoril, so he can’t be dismissed entirely.

Federer will know that a win here gives him a major chance to win this competition, especially given the fact that third seed Gael Monfils has had to withdraw. It doesn’t seem as if there will be a surprise here, but nonetheless, it will be worth seeing how well Federer performs in only his second competitive match on a clay court this season.
