The five-time champion made a smooth start, easing past Brian Dabul 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 and thrilling the crowd with another spectacular “hot dog” - the through the legs winner which the Swiss also pulled out of the bag against Novak Djokovic in last year's semi-finals.

"I thought I was a bit late," Federer said afterwards. "I had to give it one last push to get there and then I thought 'I think I can do this one again.' I've only hit a few in my life. To do it twice at the US Open centre court... it's amazing to share this moment with you guys (the crowd). Thanks for the ovation. I love it."

Beck has shown little this summer to suggest he can make a match of it against Federer. The big serving German took out Michael Berrer in straight sets in round one but previously he had lost his opening matches in Cincinnati qualifying and New Haven.
