Roger Federer should progress into the fourth round of the Australian Open 2010 on Saturday without any complications when he takes on Albert Montanes on Rod Laver Arena.

The Swiss, 5/2 favourite to win the Men's singles, cruised to victory on Thursday in the second round, disposing of Romanian Victor Hanescu (6-2 6-3 6-2).

Federer may be 1/200 to beat Montanes, but he keen to ensure he remains focused and patient going into the match.

“It's still early on in the tournament. You sometimes don't have to force the issue every single time,” he explained.

“Because against, let's say lower‑ranked players outside of top 10, you do sometimes in the rally get a second chance; whereas against top players it's pretty obvious how you gotta play. “From my standpoint, it obviously depends also on how the opponent plays.”

Montanes booked his place in the third round after a coming out victorious in a five-set marathon against Frenchman Stephane Robert, winning (4-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2).

The 29-year-old has previously never reached the third round here before, and the 20/1 on him making it to the fourth round does not appeal at all.

Federer is 2/11 to win the tie in straight sets, while you can get 4/1 on Federer winning 3-1. If you fancy the Spaniard to threaten a major upset and take it to a fifth set, you can get 14/1 on a 3-2 Federer win at time of writing.
