Roger Federer made light of gusting on-court winds during his late night US Open quarter-final win over Robin Soderling on Wednesday.

Federer smashed 18 aces on the way to gaining revenge for his French Open defeat to the Swede. This time it was very one-sided with Federer in control throughout a 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 win.

Soderling's high-risk game was affected considerably by the conditions. The Swede has a very high ball toss, which can be a nightmare when the winds really kicks up and crucially made just 57 percent of his first serves.

Federer's rhythm was unaffected and he said, "I've practiced my serve a whole lot my whole career. If I can't serve in the wind I've got a problem. You can wake me up at 2 or 4 in the morning I can still hit serves."

Soderling gave full credit to the Swiss for dealing so well with the conditions. "He served really good. He was brushing the lines at times, which is not easy in weather like this. He served much better than me. He's a good wind player. He moves well. He's always in the right places."
