Soderling, who lost to Federer in the French Open final a month ago, played well but the second seed was simply a class above, and a class too good. Federer broke once to take the first set, with Soderling conceded only three points on serve in the second set but still lost it on a tie-break. Leaving Federer to edge another hard-fought tie-break to advance in straight sets. Federer will next play the winner of a Fernando Verdasco vs Ivo Karlovic in Wednesday's quarter-finals.
