Roger Federer survived a challenge from Igor Andreev in the first round of the Australian Open 2010 on Tuesday.
Federer was expected to sail into round two, however the tricky Russian competed in the match and he certainly drew the Swiss' attention.
After Andreev took the first set, Federer bounced back to take the second set with ease and appeared to be cruising toward victory in Rod Laver Arena.
However, the story of this match was Andreev's number of missed opportunities in the third set - notably missing an easy break point opportunity at 3-3 and with Federer serving. Later in the set, Andreev missed multiple set points and ultimately lost to Federer in a tiebreaker.
Federer ended up winning the match 4-6 6-2 7-6 (7-2) 6-0 and afterwards admitted he rode his luck.
"It was a tough match," said the 11/4 favourite. "He's got incredible acceleration on his shots, especially his forehand.
"He's very physical and intense, so I was happy with the start I got today."
Nikolay Davydenko, who has beaten Federer in their last two meetings and could meet his rival in the last eight in Melbourne, demolished German qualifier Dieter Kindlmann 6-1 6-0 6-3.
The Russian sixth seed has been in blistering form recently, winning the end-of-season ATP World Tour Finals in London last November as well as recently winning in Doha.
Relaxed and confident after brushing Kindlmann aside, he said: "People start to talk about me being among the favourites now.
"It's an interesting feeling. Now I feel like I can beat everyone. It's a good feeling."
Davydenko is 9/1 at time of writing to win the Men's singles.
