Following Rafael Nadal’s decision to miss out on the Rogers Cup this year, Roger Federer became the second big name to declare his absence. The Swiss legend has decided to take time out to rest having finished as the runner-up in the Olympic singles at London 2012 this weekend.

“I am very disappointed that I have to withdraw from Toronto as I love the city and the Canadian fans are amazing,” said Federer. “I have always enjoyed playing there but after a long stretch of tournaments, I will need some time to recover.”

It’s not all bad news for the Canadian fans though. Federer made it clear that he intends to take part next season and home favourite Milos Raonic has been bumped one place up the order, so is now seeded sixteenth. The big serving youngster will receive a first round bye and could well turn out to be a contender for the title.
