Roger Federer insists he's not concerned by the rankings and he's focusing on finishing the 2011 season strongly.
Federer was usurped by Andy Murray in the rankings recently but having spent most of his career as world number one, the Swiss says he's not bothered by rankings any more and he's just concentrating on trying to add to his title collection over the next month.
I don’t even know what it takes [to regain the No. 3 position],” Federer said. “My goal is trying to win when I’m playing the next few weeks. The focus right now is trying to play well here in Basel. The next round is my priority, but clearly after winning here, semis in Paris with match points and winning London, I know I can do extremely well. And if I’m three or four at the end of the year, we’ll see, but if I’m going to make a move I need to win tournaments and that’s what it’s going to take.”
Federer is going for a fifth Swiss Indoors title and after five weeks out of the game he shook off the rust on the way to a 7-6(3), 6-4 win over Potito Starace. Sterner tests await the Swiss though particularly with old rival Andy Roddick likely to await in the quarters.
