Roger Federer has hired the former coach of Pete Sampras, Paul Annacone to work with him for a trial period.

Federer has not had a coach for some time after parting ways with Tony Roche several years ago. He will be hoping that Annacone can help him get back to the top of the game after a worrying six months for the Swiss star which has seen him lose in the French Open and Wimbledon quarter-finals and slip to number three in the world.

"I've been looking to add someone to my team and I've decided to spend some days with Paul Annacone," Federer told his official website.

"As Paul winds down his responsibilities working for the Lawn Tennis Association, we will explore our relationship through this test period. Paul will work alongside my existing team and I am excited to learn from his experiences."

Annacone was at Sampras’ side for nine of the legendary American’s 14 grand slam titles and he also helped Tim Henman make the most of the latter stages of his career. Under Annacone’s guise, Henman finally made a grand slam semi-final away from Wimbledon, reaching the last four at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows.

Annacone will be returning from the doldrums having been working as Davis Cup coach for the LTA during a time which has seen Great Britain slump to the depths of Euro-African Zone Two.     

Federer will return to the tour in Toronto next month.
