Federer was bitterly disappointed with his showings at the French Open and Wimbledon where he was ousted by two big servers in Robin Soderling and Tomas Berdych.
“The past year I’ve been very disappointed with my returning," he said. "I’ve played very safe the whole time and even on the first serve I haven’t been able to read the players as much, which had been my big strength. That got me thinking… After Wimbledon I had six weeks to work on a few things. On the hard courts it’s nice to play forwards and not always be defensive and let the other guy dictate. I’m happy that the hard work is paying off right away.”
It was that positive attitude which was the hallmark of his win over Baghdatis. When they played in Indian Wells earlier in the year it was a straight out baseline slog with the Cypriot getting plenty of chances to unleash his powerful array of shots from the back of the court. However this time Federer did everything to keep Baghdatis guessing, mixing in chip-charges and always looking to get forward to finish off points.
It is an attitude which should serve him well at the US Open where the fast hard courts always aid the more aggressively minded players.
