Roger Federer's third round win means he now holds the record for most wins at the Australian Open.

The four-time champion overtook Stefan Edberg after beating Xavier Malisse 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in a match which was far tougher than the scoreboard suggests.

Federer now has 57 wins in Melbourne largely on the back of his four titles (2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010) and he has not failed to reach the semi-finals since 2003.

Federer was involved in a scrappy contest against Malisse and the Swiss definitely did not have it all his own way but after reeling off five straight games to take the second set he broke the Belgian's willpower.

Some wondered how sharp Federer would be after that draining five setter against Gilles Simon on Wednesday but the Swiss' fitness levels remain as supreme as ever and it will take far more than that to derail his progress.

He takes on Tommy Robredo on Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals and with a dominant head-to-head record against the Spaniard, few would bet against Federer advancing to the last eight.
