Federer bounced in the second round of the BNP Paribas Masters.
Roger Federer fell on Wednesday to a largely unheralded player in Julien Benneteau. You can't really say that Federer played bad for the entire match although there were plenty of balls he hit that seemed to, uncharacteristically, sail long.
At first Federer appeared to be cruising through the match as he took the first set down 6-3.
However the second set went to a tiebreaker, which wasn't all that alarming, as Federer wins tons of tiebreakers. But after Benneteau took the tiebreaker down and then proceeded to break Federer early in the third set you had to wonder if the upset was on at the Paris Masters.
Benneteau played better today than he has in any match this year especially when his serve was in danger of being broke in the 8th game of the 3rd set.
He made plays and shots above his normal level of play to keep himself in the lead in Paris despite a charge by Federer.
Benneteau was awarded with what has to be the biggest upset of his career as he took Federer, a -6600 prematch favorite with bet365, out of the pretigious Masters Series event.
Federer missed a lot of shots he normally hits and eyebrows should be raised.
Are we looking at the new Federer who is upset prone or is this just a temporary lapse?
One thing is for sure: when considering Federer in the futures market for 2010 you'll need odds that are longer than what they have been in the past.
